Types of Collective Housing

When we speak of collective housing, we think of housing estates and buildings. However, there are several types of collective housing, including hospitals, student residences, shared residences, short and long-stay hotels, and elderly homes, which burst forth as new models that offer solutions and services for current social groups.

Here, experts from the housing complex Ebbets Field Apartments present the type of spaces that are generated in these collective housing complexes:

Residences or residential complexes. These buildings consist of a group of houses distributed horizontally or vertically. Its inhabitants share spaces such as parks, parking and laundry, among others. Housing complex Ebbets Field Apartments offers common spaces such as playground and courtyard. Commonly, families are not related at all, but there may be cases where there are two or three families in the same collective dwelling. Likewise, it may happen that a single person occupies a home, without having to be a complete family.

Loft. These are contemporary and innovative spaces. Ebbets Field Apartments experts explain in their articles on Medium, that the spaces in these homes are not separated physically with walls, but by colors or materials. Usually, they have an American-style kitchen and mobile or folding panels, and the spaces are very illuminated by large windows. This type of collective housing was implemented for the first time in New York. Apartment. It is one of the most common collective dwellings. They consist of one-story spaces with compartments that separate the bedrooms, bathrooms, kitchen, and living-dining room. It is one of the most demanded group dwellings and its prices are most adjusted to the needs of the users.

Duplex. It consists of a two-story house where the floors are connected by a staircase inside the house. These are small houses, common in the city centers. Ebbets Field Apartments experts (follow them on Linkedin) indicate that although duplexes have a few square meters, beacuse of their tall structure, the space does not look so small.

The collective dwellings are designed so that the inhabitants share the common spaces and pay the necessary fees for the services together. As Ebbets Field Apartments experts have shared above, there are other types of commercial housing: hospitals, pensions, student or worker residences, and even prisons (legally considered collective housing). The structure of each type of house is made for the same purpose: people or group of people living in compartments and sharing common areas.
